Press Release

The Sudbury Wolves hockey family was saddened today to learn of the passing of long-time game announcer Berk Keaney. Berk Keaney was 90 years of age.   Mr. Keaney announced Wolves home games for each of the team’s 40 years the team played in the OHL.  Berk announced his final official game on December 2nd, 2011 vs the Brampton Battalion.   The entire Wolves’ organization saluted Mr. Keaney throughout the game as well as at the conclusion of the game.   Mr. Keaney began announcing Wolves’ games back in 1953.   His special appearance at a Wolves’ game in February, 2012 against the Windsor Spitfires was featured on CBC ‘s Hockey Day in Canada (see link below).

“The Sudbury Wolves would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the Keaney Family” notes Wolves’ President Blaine Smith.  “Berk Keaney will always be remembered for his dedication and support of the Sudbury Wolves players and the team. Our games have never quite been the same since he retired last year but his spirit and passion for the Wolves and our community will live on forever.   If I think of someone that we should all try and aspire to be, Berk Keaney comes to mind.   He was admired, respected and cared deeply about his family, the Wolves’ players and the hockey fans of Sudbury – who he constantly referred to as:  “the greatest hockey fans in the world.”   The Sudbury Wolves family has lost a dear friend and our community has lost a sports legend.   We had the privilege of knowing and listening to the greatest hockey announcer in the world for the past 59 years.”

The Sudbury Wolves will observe a moment of silence in honour of Berk Keaney prior to the start of the Wolves’ game against the Saginaw Spirit this Friday, Oct. 12th at 7:35 pm.
