Cents Defenceman Dane Birks Commits to Michigan Tech University

Press Release

The Merritt Centennials are excited to announce the commitment of 17-year-old defenceman Dane Birks to Michigan Tech University for the 2014-15 season.

Birks is in his first BCHL season after playing 2011-12 with the junior 'B' Creston Valley Thunder Cats of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League. The Williams Lake product had 24 points in 47 games with Creston and also skated in ten BCHL games with the Trail Smoke Eaters as an affiliate player.

"Dane has stepped into our program this season and made an impact immediately," said Cents GM and Head Coach Luke Pierce. "He is a player with a tremendous passion for the game and will continue to evolve into a premier defenceman in the BC Hockey League."

"Michigan Tech is an incredible school both athletically and academically, and we expect Dane to contribute there when his time comes," Pierce continued. "We relish the opportunity to work with Dane over the next two years as we prepare him for his next step while enjoying the benefits of his play here in Merritt."
