Press Release
SASKATOON – The host committee for the 2013 MasterCard Memorial Cup is very pleased to announce that SaskEnergy has been named official sponsor of volunteers, and together they would like to welcome home Hockey Hall of Famer Bernie Federko as the volunteer ambassador for the event.
Event organizers introduced Federko during Tuesday’s official call
for volunteers at SaskEnergy headquarters in Saskatoon. Applications are
now being accepted for 600 volunteer positions at the 2013 MasterCard
Memorial Cup which runs from May 16-26.
"Saskatoon is where I got my start and I have huge respect for the
Blades,” said Federko, who spent three seasons with the team from
1973-76 en route to a 14-year NHL career with St. Louis and Detroit.
“This is home still. My mom still lives here. It is a privilege (to be
involved) and I hope the Blades win the Memorial Cup."
Federko, who hails from Foam Lake, Sask., still holds the Blades’
single-season record for points (187). He subsequently compiled 1,130
points in 1,000 NHL games. In 2002, Federko became the first Blade
alumnus to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
“We are very proud to have someone of Bernie’s stature join our team
for the 2013 MasterCard Memorial Cup,” said event co-chair Tim Gitzel,
the CEO of Cameco Corporation. “He has always represented the Blades and
Saskatchewan with class, and he will be an outstanding ambassador for
our team of volunteers.”
To commemorate Federko’s involvement in the 2013 MasterCard Memorial
Cup, the first 1,500 fans at Wednesday’s game between the Blades and Red
Deer Rebels will receive a limited edition, jumbo hockey card of the
former Blade captain. Federko will also be signing autographs at the
game.
Individuals wishing to volunteer for the 2013 MasterCard
Memorial Cup can apply in-person at Wednesday’s game. The remainder of
applications will be accepted online starting Thursday, Oct. 4, at 8
a.m. on www.mastercardmemorialcup.ca/volunteer. The host committee gratefully acknowledges Sask Energy’s ongoing support of volunteer-driven activities.
