Azurdia Heading to UConn

Press Release

Township of Langley, BC, Wednesday, October 17, 2012:  The Langley Rivermen Junior “A” Hockey Club is pleased to announce the commitment of Austin Azurdia (1993 born) to the University of Connecticut for 2013.

Azurdia is off to a fantastic start to his first BCHL season. He currently is tied for the team lead in points with 12 and leads the team with 7 goals.

“As an organization we are extremely excited for Austin, he is just starting to realize his potential as a hockey player and UConn recognized that and were there at the right time and the pieces fell into place for them,” said Associate Head Coach Jordan Emmerson.

The UConn Huskies are a division one team that play in the NCAA and are a member of Atlantic Hockey. They are an up and coming program that is starting to get a lot of financial backing from the school to boot,

“They just got full 18 athletic scholarships and were a walk on school before this and they are now able to recruit to different type of hockey players and are moving to the Hockey East division in 2014/2015, which is one of the best conferences in college hockey,” Emmerson said.

Azurdia has become famous around the hockey world after his highlight reel goal he scored against Prince George on October 7th. His spectacular buzzer beating goal has gone viral across North America with it appearing on major media channels such as Global News, TSN, Sportsnet, ESPN, and CNN.  It currently has over 90,000 hits on YouTube.

“The goal showed his skill, compete, and the type of will that he has, it was absolutely phenomenal,” Emmerson stated.
