Slammers take game one

It was a tight battle as the Woodstock Slammers and Yarmouth Mariners got the Kent Cup final underway on Wednesday night in Woodstock. Yarmouth scored early on a goal from Colin Campbell at 50 seconds to give the Mariners a 1-0 lead heading into the second. But a powerplay goal from Zach Shannon at 2:34 of the second would even the game at 1 a piece. Late in the third, Woodstock would get the game winner from Brad Greene at 19:36, setting the stage for game two to take place Thursday night in Woodstock.

"I thought it was a great game for the fans, both teams had offensive chances, threw some big hits and played hard for 60 minutes", said Slammers Head Coach Jason Tatarnic. "We're the happy with the win and I thought we played better as the game went on and we want to continue where we left off tonight. Yarmouth is a solid hockey team and we know they will be ready to play".

Mariners Head Coach laurie Barron expressed disappointment in that his team wasn't able to take advantage of what appeared to be a slightly rusty Slammers team.

"We are very disappointed that we let that game slip away", he said. "we felt like Woodstock was there for the taking and looked like a team that hadn't played in a week plus.The game slipped away when we couldn't gain any momentum on our power play. Our best players need to be better on the powerplay because if it's not 5 guys outworking 4, then good things won't happen. Charles (Grant) gave us a chance to win and it's disappointing that we let that one slip away".

"But, we jump right back on the horse and learn from our mistakes. I though our depth guys played well but our big dogs need to be better. With Wigg out our top 2 lines need to find a way to score. We have been down before but this team will find a way to get a win tonight and get home ice back."
