Wolves’ Michael Sgarbossa Named CHL Player of the Week

Toronto, ON – The Canadian Hockey League today announced that Sudbury Wolves forward Michael Sgarbossa is the CHL Player of the Week for the week ending March 4 after scoring three goals and five assists for eight points in two games with a plus-minus rating of plus-6.

Sgarbossa recorded his first career five-point game last Friday night and was named first star of an 8-5 win over the Kitchener Rangers scoring two goals and three assists.  Then on Saturday night, he scored a goal and two assists and was named second star of a 4-1 win over the Peterborough Petes.  The win clinched a playoff spot for the Wolves while Sgarbossa extended his personal point-streak to 18 games which is the second longest streak in the OHL this season while climbing to the top of the OHL scoring race where he is now tied with Tyler Toffoli of the Ottawa 67’s.

Sgarbossa, a 19-year-old from Campbellville, ON, is playing in his fourth OHL season.  Now a Colorado Avalanche prospect, Sgarbossa has a career-high 92 points in 59 games with 44 goals and 48 assists and was named the OHL’s Player of the Month for February.

Also considered for the award this week was Sven Bartschi of the Portland Winterhawks who scored eight goals and two assists for 10 points in four games, while Tomas Hyka of the Gatineau Olympiques scored two goals with seven assists for nine points in three games.
