Minor Midget Player of the Year Awards Presented at 2012 OHL Cup

Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League today announced the six recipients of Minor Hockey Player of the Year Awards for players representing the four Ontario Hockey Federation Member Partners including the ALLIANCE, GTHL, NOHA, and OMHA, along with Hockey Northwestern Ontario and the Ottawa District Minor Hockey Association.

All six winners are currently competing at the 2012 OHL Cup and include Jared McCann of the London Jr. Knights named ALLIANCE Player of the Year, Connor McDavid of the Toronto Marlboros named GTHL Player of the Year, Michael Amadio of the Sault Ste. Marie North Stars is the NOHA Player of the Year, Nik Coric of the York Simcoe Express won the OMHA Player of the Year award, Bryce Martyn of the Thunder Bay Kings is the HNO Player of the Year, and the ODMHA Player of the Year is Andrew Abou-Assaly of the Ottawa Jr. 67’s.

The awards were presented at the OHL Showcase Tournament Banquet and marks the second straight awards presentation recognizing the achievements of the top minor midget aged players from across Ontario. The Player of the Year Award are presented annually to honour the minor midget player who best exemplifies outstanding ability and the qualities of sportsmanship and leadership as voted by the minor hockey coaches, managers and organizations of each respective league.

“Players are the most important part of our game and it is important to recognize the achievements of these great players,” said OHL Commissioner David Branch. “Congratulations to all six award winners and to their proud families and coaches for a tremendous hockey season.”

McCann, a 6’0 forward, scored 33 goals and 26 assists for 59 points in 29 games played for the London Jr. Knights who captured the ALLIANCE championship this season.

McDavid, a 5’11 forward led all award winners with 33 goals and 39 assists for 72 points in 33 games competing as an underage player with the GTHL champions the Toronto Marlboros.

Amadio, a 5’11 forward scored 32 goals and 30 assists for 62 points in 29 games for the NOHA’s Sault Ste. Marie North Stars, competing in the OHL Cup with the GNML Selects.

Coric, a 5’8 forward with the OMHA’s York Simcoe Express scored 23 goals and 32 assists for 55 points in 34 games played this season.

Martyn, a 6’0 defenceman with HNO’s Thunder Bay Kings scored six goals and 16 assists for 22 points in 33 games.

Abou-Assaly, a 5’10 forward scored 25 goals and 33 assists for 58 points in 29 games helping the Ottawa Jr. 67’s win the championship in the ODMHA.
