Winterhawks Sign Zach Paterson & Tyler Sandhu

Press Release

The Portland Winterhawks have signed their two second round picks from the 2011 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft, defenseman Zach Paterson and center Tyler Sandhu.

Paterson was drafted 34th overall in the May Bantam Draft by the Hawks, in a pick the team acquired in a trade with the Victoria Royals. Sandhu was taken by Portland 42nd overall.

Paterson had nine goals and 15 assists for 24 points in 29 games last season with the Edmonton South Side Athletic Club of the Alberta Minor Hockey League.

Sandhu had 46 goals and 45 assists for 91 points in 40 games with the Seafair Islanders of the Seafair Minor Hockey Association. This season with the Greater Vancouver Canadians of the British Columbia Major Midget League, Sandhu has 11 goals and nine assists for 20 points in 16 games.

“We are excited to have Zach and Tyler under contract,” said Winterhawks General Manager & Head Coach Mike Johnston. “Zach is a strong-skating two-way defenseman and Tyler is a skilled center. Both players fit in perfectly with our style of play and needs for the future.”

Both players played in the WHL Prospects U16 Challenge from October 27 - 30 in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. The tournament is for the Top 20 players in each province from the 1996 age group.
