MARK MACKAY NAMED TEAM WHL HONOURARY CAPTAIN

Press Release

CALGARY, AB – The Canadian Hockey League in association with the Western Hockey League and Moose Jaw Warriors Hockey Clubs today announced that former Moose Jaw Warriors forward and team Captain Mark MacKay will serve as Honourary Captain for the 2011 SUBWAY® Super Series game between Team WHL and the Russian National Junior Team being held in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan on Thursday, November 17th. MacKay will participate in the pregame ceremonies as part of the game in Moose Jaw.

The Brandon, MB native joined the Moose Jaw Warriors for the 1984-85 season and was the Clubs' first ever Team Captain. That season, MacKay accumulated a total of 66 goals and 74 assists for 140 points in 71 games earning him WHL Rookie-of-the-Year honours as a 20 year old.

Following his season with the Warriors, MacKay went on to a successful professional hockey career in Europe from 1985 through until 2001. During that time, in 1995, he joined the German National Team and was fortunate to play in six World Championships, one World Cup of Hockey and the Winter Olympic Games in 1998 and 2002. While in Germany, MacKay founded a Children`s Foundation called `Goals for Kids` to help create a better life for underprivileged kids. In all, he accumulated an impressive 2,000 points in his successful professional career.

Hockey runs in the MacKay family as Mark's son Matt also played in the WHL, wrapping up his junior career last season with the Brandon Wheat Kings. Today, Mark works as a player agent based in Calgary for CAA, the agency that handles such players as Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin.

“Having Mark MacKay as our honorary captain for the Subway Super Series game is a very fitting choice” commented Warriors Director of Business Operations, Corey Nyhagen. “As the original Warriors Captain and Warriors & Legends Hall of Famer, Mark is an integral part of the Warriors Alumni and the history that the club has created in the City of Moose Jaw. We are very excited to have Mark joining us for this game and I know all of our fans will be equally excited about seeing him in Mosaic Place!”
