Buffalo Jr. Sabres forward Josh Kielich (photo credit - Brian Watts/OJHL) has confirmed his commitment to join the Canisius College Golden Griffins beginning with the 2013-14 Atlantic Hockey (NCAA DI) season.
A resident of Orchard Park, New York, Kielich is currently the second-leading scorer for the Buffalo Junior Sabres, led by head coach Grant Ledyard. In 17 regular season games played through October 31, Kielich had 12 goals and 9 assists for the Sabres.
“I have been speaking with a number of Division-I schools and I enjoyed meeting the coaches, but the Canisius staff made me feel comfortable,” said Kielich. “Coach (Dave) Smith and Coach (B.J.) Adams work closely with Coach Ledyard and they made it clear I was a good fit.”
Kielich, age 18, is currently enrolled part-time at Erie Community College and carries a grade point average of 4.0. He plans to major in business when he joins Canisius after completing his junior hockey career. As Kielich noted: “Buffalo is a big hockey town. Canisius has players from all over North America. How many guys get to play Division-I in their hometown? That is a benefit.”
As a junior-A level hockey program operated by members of the Buffalo Sabres Alumni Association, the Buffalo Junior Sabres develop elite players ages 16-20 for consideration by higher-level hockey programs, particularly NCAA college teams. Kielich becomes the second Junior Sabres player this season to commit to a NCAA Division-I school.
