ROYALS TRADE FOR DEFENCEMAN HAYDEN RINTOUL

Press Release

Victoria, BC – The Victoria Royals have acquired defenceman Hayden Rintoul and a conditional draft pick from the Kootenay Ice in exchange for forward Dylen McKinlay.

The native of Calgary, AB joins the Royals after finishing the 2010-11 season with the Ice where he recorded 24 points (5g-19a) and 51 penalty minutes in 51 games. The 20-year-old Rintoul played in 19 postseason games for Kootenay this past spring, registering 1g-3a and 22 minutes in penalties as the Ice went on to win the Ed Chynoweth Cup as the Western Hockey League (WHL) Champions. As part of Kootenay’s Memorial Cup squad, Rintoul played in all five games picking up six penalty minutes.

“We lost two overage defencemen after last season in Jeff Einhorn and Brandon Manning,” General Manager and Head Coach Marc Habscheid said. “Hayden will step into that role this year and help solidify our defensive corps, while providing leadership and championship experience.”

The 6’0, 187 lb defenceman has spent his three seasons (2008-11) in the WHL with Kootenay. In 188 career games with the Ice he tallied 93 points (19g-74) to go along with 138 minutes in penalties.

“We would like to thank Dylen for all his contributions to our organization over the last three years,” Habscheid said. “We wish him the best of luck with the Kootenay Ice and in the continuation of his hockey endeavours.”

McKinlay moves to the Kootenay Ice after spending the last three seasons with the Chilliwack Bruins (2008-11). The 19-year-old forward registered 29g-43a for 72 points, and 164 penalty minutes in 182 contests for the club.
