Rebels’ Ryan Nugent-Hopkins Named CHL Player of the Week

Toronto, ON – The Canadian Hockey League today announced that Ryan Nugent-Hopkins of the Red Deer Rebels is the CHL Player of the Week for the week ending February 6. In three games the 2011 NHL Entry Draft prospect had 12 points including five goals and seven assists.

Nugent-Hopkins led the Rebels to two wins and was twice named first star of the game including Friday night when he scored his second career hat-trick and added three assists for a career-high six points in an 8-1 win over the Moose Jaw Warriors. He also led the Rebels to a 7-4 Wednesday night win over the Prince Albert Raiders scoring one goal and adding three assists following his two-point night with a goal and assist on Tuesday despite a 7-5 loss to the Saskatoon Blades.

Nugent-Hopkins, a 17-year-old from Burnaby, BC, is playing in his second full WHL season with the Rebels and has recorded seven straight multi-point games to rank third overall among WHL scorers with 79 points in 52 games played. Ranked third by NHL Central Scouting, Nugent-Hopkins was named Player of the Game for Team Orr at the 2011 Home Hardware CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game.

Dave Labrecque of the Shawinigan Cataractes is considered for the award for a second straight week after producing nine points in three games scoring two goals and adding seven assists. In the OHL, Brett Thompson of the Erie Otters scored six goals with two assists for eight points in two games.
