Ginn to guard Crusaders crease, signs with Holy Cross

Press Release

Victoria Grizzlies goaltender Matt Ginn says he is happy he only has to concern himself with stopping rubber now that he's accepted a scholarship to play for the Holy Cross Crusaders starting in the 2011-12 season.

"It definitely is a relief to get (the signing) out of the way," said Ginn, who will turn 20 later this month. "Now I can focus on winning games and helping the team win a championship here."

It seems he's done a good job of focusing so far. He's posted a 24-19 record and is the busiest goalie in the BCHL, having played faced 1,454 shots in 2,581 minutes so far this season. The Lindsay, Ont. native is also sixth in the league with a .913 save percentage to go along with two shutouts and a 2.93 goals against average.

"We are very excited to have Matt Ginn committed to play for our program at Holy Cross," said Crusaders assistant coach Robert Godfrey.

Holy Cross is located in Worcester, Massachusetts and the Crusaders hockey team competes in the Atlantic Hockey Conference. Ginn will join fellow BCHL products Erik Vos (Powell River Kings) and Jeff Reppucci (Alberni Valley Bulldogs) on the team.

The school's eastern location is part of the attraction to Ginn because his parents can now drive down from Ontario to see him play. He toured the campus last week and was impressed with what he saw.

"I loved it; it's a good school and the rink was nice," he said. "The guys were good to me so I really liked it."

The scholarship is just one more marker checked off the list of hockey milestones for Ginn.

"That was my goal since I started playing junior hockey when I was 16," said Ginn, adding he thinks he'll study business or psychology at Holy Cross. "It's nice to achieve the goal."
